The City of Braunschweig

With its Technical University, the Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (German Aerospace Center), more than 20 other research institutions and a large number of innovative companies, Braunschweig forms the center of one of the most research-intensive regions in Europe. This is also reflected in its R&D expenses measured in terms of GDP where Braunschweig takes a top position in Europe, according to the EU statistics office. Furthermore, with 4% of all employees, the region has the highest “scientist density” in Europe. More than 16,000 people work in the institutions of the ForschungRegion (an association of research institutes) and an additional 20,000 work in research positions in the industry.

The promotion of knowledge and technology transfer has also given rise to a technology-oriented start-up scene and a diverse, entrepreneurial ecosystem in Braunschweig.

As a result, Braunschweig takes a top position worldwide. A creative environment, interdisciplinary cooperation and networking between science and industry are the basis for outstanding innovations – and are part of everyday life in Braunschweig.

The Old Town Hall is one of the most important medieval town halls in Germany. In this historical, meaningful building, the Welcome Reception of WSA&SCC 2023 will take place on Monday, 27th January 2023.

The building’s oldest structure dates back to the 13th century. Back then, it was mainly used for the meeting of the council of the old town, the large hall “Dornse” was also used for festivities. The Old Town Hall consists of two wings meeting at a right angle. On one of the columns of the portico, there is the “Brunswick cubit” (57.07 cm) which was used as a historical measure mainly by the cloth merchants.

On the right-angled balcony above, there are nine interesting pillar figure elements by Hans Hesse from the 15th century, depicting Ottonian and Guelph emperors, kings and dukes with their wives.
